Things to Do in Croyde – From the Campsite Gate
Croyde is one of those places that feels like a proper escape. Tucked into the North Devon coast, it offers a mix of sea, surf, clifftop walks, and a warm village feel. From Combas Farm Camping, it’s easy to enjoy it all – whether you’re heading to the beach, walking the coast path, or just popping into the pub.
Here are a few of the things our campers love to do in and around Croyde.
The Village
Croyde village is a short walk from the farm and full of charm, with its mix of thatched cottages, surf shops, and a few very decent pubs. It’s small, friendly, and has everything you need for a few days by the sea – from pasties and ice creams to wetsuit hire and local crafts.
It’s also a good place to start (or end) a walk, grab a coffee, or sit in a sunny beer garden with a pint after a day in the sea.
Surfing and Beaches
Croyde Bay is well known for its surf, and it draws people from all over the country. It’s great for experienced surfers, but there are also lessons and board hire available if you’re just starting out. The beach does get busy in summer, but it has a great atmosphere and is lifeguarded during the season.
For a quieter beach day, Putsborough Sands is just around the corner. You can walk there from the campsite (allow about 20 minutes, or drive and park up. It’s one of our favourite places – great views, usually a bit more space, and dog-friendly year-round, unlike Croyde which has restrictions during the summer.
Good Places to Eat
There are some great spots to eat in and around the village. A few firm favourites with our campers include:
The Thatch – known for lively evenings, pub food, and a big beer garden in summer.
Blue Groove – relaxed and family-friendly, with a mix of world dishes and local classics.
New Coast Kitchen – a smaller, modern spot for something a bit more special.
Downend Café – ideal for post-surf breakfasts or a curry with a view. Yes, they serve Sri Lankan curries just off the beach!
There’s something for most tastes and budgets, and plenty of places welcome dogs too.
Walking and the South West Coast Path
If you enjoy a good walk, you’re in the right place. Baggy Point, part of the South West Coast Path, is a short distance from the campsite and offers fantastic views of the coastline. It’s a steady, fairly easy walk from the National Trust car park and you might even spot seals or porpoises if you’re lucky.
There are plenty of options for longer hikes too, whether you head towards Woolacombe or loop back via the fields and lanes behind the farm.
A Laid-Back Place to Explore
Croyde isn’t about ticking off a big list of things to do – it’s more about slowing down and making the most of your surroundings. Swim, walk, read, eat, chat, nap. However you spend your days, Combas Farm Camping makes a great base for it all.
If you’ve not been before, we’re always happy to point you in the direction of a good walk or a quiet pint.
